Crocodile River Estate Hydro Electrical Power Plant – Construction of Abstraction/Exstraction Point, Pipeline (Penstock) and Hydro Building

Golden Frontiers Citrus (Pty) Ltd appointed SKCM Engineers for the Civil works relating to the upgrading of the existing Crocodile River Hydro electrical power plant. The upgraded hydro electrical power plant capacity will be 450KW. The Hydro replacement together with the solar farm will allow the farm to be less dependent on the Eskom network but also be able to bank surplus energy into the Eskom network. The hydro will have the option to
generate power in an off Grid mode for only farm consumption but also in a Parallel mode to be able to bank surplus energy into the Eskom network. It can also generate in conjunction with the network if power generation falls short on the farm.
The civil works related to the Hydro electrical power plant consisted of:
New draw off structure from existing canal from Crocodile river with sluices, silt trap, scour and other pipe works, new irrigation pump plinths
New Penstock 800mm dia. steel pipeline on top of ground on concrete plinths (total length 650m) with concrete plinths with steel holding down straps, Concrete anchor blocks, Scour valves, Air valves, Water meter New hydro building with concrete roof, doors, windows and louvres including, Gantry beam with lifting mechanism, Steel walkway, new concrete channel to river and ancillary works.
